The Patterson Mill boys lacrosse team’s bid for a state title fell a goal short Tuesday to a talented Glenelg club at UMBC.

The Huskies lost 5-4 in the Class 1A-2A state championship game. They never led.

“Not many gave us a chance today,” Huskies head coach Jason Bellamy, whose team executed his game plan to near perfection, said. “We executed our zone defense very well, we had very few breakdowns.”

The Huskies trailed 1-0 after one quarter, but pulled even midway through the second on a Brandon Burris goal, assisted by Brendan Egan.

The game stayed tied into halftime, but Glenelg did all the scoring in the third quarter with a pair of goals for a 3-1 lead.

The Huskies opened the scoring in the fourth quarter when Josh Wilson converted off a pass from Deonte Alston with 9:03 to play, bringing the Huskies back to within a goal at 3-2.

For a second time in the game, Glenelg then rattled off consecutive goals for a 5-2 lead with 4:54 left.

Less than 30 seconds later, Patterson Mill’s Wilson scored his second goal on a low shot off assist from Cameron Barnett.

The Huskies kept the pressure on and with 18 seconds left, Wilson tallied his third goal of the quarter to set up a final face-off.

That face-off, like all but three in the game, was controlled by Glenelg, which ran out the clock.

“Hats off to them, hats off to our defense as well, they played a heck of a game,” Huskies goalie Jay Kuhn said. Kuhn, a junior, finished with nine saves.

The Huskies ended their season with a 12-7 record.
