Many workers could be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC, this year and not know it, according to the Harford County Community Action Agency, sponsor of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program that offers free, basic tax preparation and online e-filing to qualified local taxpayers who earn less than $49,000 a year.

The IRS estimates that four of every five workers who qualify for EITC receive the credit, but workers move in and out of eligibility based on changes in earnings, parental and/or marital status. So workers eligible for the first time because of the economy’s impact on their earnings may not know they qualify. The credit could put up to $5,666 in their pockets to help with expenses now or save for the future. But to receive EITC, taxpayers must file, even if they aren’t required to file otherwise, and claim the credit.

Harford Community Action Agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program can help workers determine if they qualify for EITC. The VITA program offers free, basic tax preparation and online e-filing to qualified taxpayers who earn less than $49,000 a year.

HCAA will offer VITA services through April 9. Trained and IRS-certified volunteers will prepare and file taxes at two locations in Harford County, one at the main community action agency office in Edgewood and one at Grove Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. VITA sites will be open Monday through Thursday and Saturday during both day and evening hours. Appointments are strongly suggested and may be made by calling 410-510-7726, ext. 230.

HCAA is the designated agency providing programs and services to address the needs of low-income individuals, families and communities in Harford County.
