Playing in the championship round of the Route 40 Corridor Classic Tournament on Thursday night, the Havre de Grace Warriors boys basketball squad, helped by a superior first-half effort, came away with a 61-51 victory over the host-team Joppatowne Mariners.
With the win, the Warriors became the second squad to take top honors at the event, as Joppatowne won last year’s inaugural tournament.
Over the first two quarters of Thursday’s title showdown, Havre de Grace more than doubled the Mariners’ output, scoring 39 to Joppatowne’s 16. Joppatowne outscored the Warriors 35-22 in the final two frames, but the first-half deficit proved too large to overcome.
Darin Washington was the Warriors’ hot hand, scoring a game-best 17 points. Nate Jones scored 11 in the victory, while Dayshawn Bolling and Trevell Malloy both missed double digits by a single tally, scoring nine points apiece. Jevon Hill-Gee scored six for the Warriors, while Travonn Bond netted five points in the victory.
The Mariners’ offense was paced by Micah Baugh, who had a 13-point performance, while Shendell Chase was close behind with 12 points. Joel Scott and Ryan Stokeling scored 10 and seven points, respectively, for Joppatowne, while Ron Barclay hit for five points in the loss. Joppatowne’s Markell Huggins had four points.
Eagles knock off Rams
The Route 40 Corridor Classic’s consolation round contest pitted the Edgewood Rams against the Aberdeen Eagles on Thursday, and when the final buzzer sounded it was the Eagles who had walked away with a third-place finish by topping Edgewood 75-68.
Through two quarters of play, Aberdeen led the Rams 36-21. Edgewood outscored the Eagles 47-39 in the second half, but could not make up for their halftime disadvantage.
For Aberdeen, two players shared the title of top offensive contributor, as Dendre Henson and Gerrae Williams both turned in 20-point performances. Tevon Saddler netted 18 in the victory, while Markeys Branch and Dwayne McGill each scored seven for the Eagles. Aberdeen’s Geofrey Brown posted six points, and fellow Eagle Mike Davenport scored four points in the win.
Thomas Dillard came through with a 20-point showing to lead the Rams in scoring, while Van Rolle put up 15 points for Edgewood. Topez Humbert registered 14 points in the loss, and teammate Royal Douglas scored eight points. Seth Higgins had seven points for the Rams.
Pats win dramatic comeback
Facing a 48-40 deficit with just under two minutes left on the clock in their Friday-night match-up with the Thomas Jefferson squad, of Brooklyn, N.Y., the John Carroll Patriots coolly wrapped up the game with a 9-0 run to take a one-point victory in the third round of the Stop-DWI Classic in Binghamton, N.Y.
John Carroll was still behind by one point in the game’s waning seconds, when the Patriots received the ball in transition. Malcolm McMillan took a pass in the paint, went to the hole, and dropped in a lay-up with six seconds remaining, sealing the Patriots’ 49-48 win.
After one quarter of play, the Thomas Jefferson Boys were up 15-9, but John Carroll went on a 15-2 run in the second frame to earn a 28-25 halftime advantage. Up 37-28 at one point in the third quarter, the Patriots were outscored 20-3 heading into the game’s final two minutes.
McMillan scored six of his eight points during the Patriots 9-0, game-ending run, and also grabbed three rebounds. Jarred Jones led the Patriots with 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, while teammate Ronald Scott contributed 11 points and rebounds. Mike Owona posted seven points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in the victory, while Kamau Stokes had seven points, two assists and two rebounds.
The victory earned John Carroll a third-place finish at the tournament, and upped the Patriots’ overall record to 16-1 on the year, with their lone loss coming to Imhotep Charter School in the tournament’s semifinal round.
