Bel Air’s controversial proposal to increase the town employees’ pension plan is off the table.
“We want to spend some time educating the commissioners and we don’t have any plans right now to take it any further,” Town Administrator Chris Schlehr said Tuesday.Schlehr said the plan is off the Board of Town Commissioners’ agenda, although he would not say it would never come back.
The proposal, which would increase the pensions of some town employees by more than 20 percent, drew a packed house of protesters to the last town meeting Nov. 15.
The protest was led by local members of the Tea Party Movement who were whipped up beforehand by Commissioner Terry Hanley, who says the proposed changes are too costly.
The town’s regular work session, set for Tuesday, was canceled because there was nothing else on the agenda, other than some recognitions of employees and students. The town meeting, set for this upcoming Monday, may also be canceled.
Schlehr said a decision about that should be made sometime today (Wednesday).
The next scheduled work session is Dec. 14 and the next town meeting is Dec. 20.
