Looking ahead in football

The practicing continues, but the games begin now too, as the 2010 high school football season gets under way today (Friday). All three area teams, Aberdeen, Havre de Grace and Perryville, have been cracking the pads since mid-August. Here’s a look at each team.

Aberdeen

Head coach: John Siemsen (fourth year)

2009 record: 6-4

Top returners: Dontrell Patterson, Sr., (SE/SS); Kennard Squirrel, Sr., (TB/DB); Michael Kelly, Sr., (TB/DB); Sam Serio, Sr., (OT/DT), Deen Wright, Sr., (OT/DT); Marcus Webster, Sr., (OG/NG); Nick Cosner, Sr., (C/DT).

Key newcomers: Kenny Faulcon, Jr. (QB/MLB); Chris Carpenter, Jr., (SE/FS); Olajuan Brown, Jr., (FB/OLB).

Outlook: “Our goal this year is to continue to improve from our previous years (2007 4-6, 2008 5-5 and 2009 6-4),” Siemsen said.

Havre de Grace

Head coach: Johnny Brooks (13th year)

2009 record: 8-5

Top returners: Dayshawn Bolling, Sr., (SE/DB); Jordan Stallings, Sr., (FB/LB); Deylin Lucas, Sr., (RB/LB); Monty Werts, Sr., (TE/LB); Brenton Barnes, Jr, (OL/DL); Nick Gardside, Sr., (WB/LB); Travonn Bond, Sr., (WB/S); David Kelly, Sr., (RB/LB).

Key newcomers: Darin Washington, Jr., (QB/S); Kevin Holloway, Jr., (OL/DL); Ryan Weismiller, Sr., (OL/DL).

Outlook: “Not very deep at any one position so staying healthy will really be important,” coach Brooks said.

Perryville

Head coach: Tim Myers (second year)

2009 record: 6-4

Top returners: Joe Peaker, Sr., (RB); Jacob Morgan, Jr., (LB); Jesse Ellis, Jr., (RB); Gaige Padgett, Jr., (RB); Gabriel Sherrod, Jr., (QB); Jordan Amos, Sr., (QB); Anthony Hayden, Sr., (RB); Matt Hornberger, Sr., (RB); Matt Rothke, Sr., (OL/DL).

Key newcomers: Ediberto Escobar, Jr., (RB); Alex Vines, Sr., (K).

Outlook: “Our goals are to make playoffs and kick field goals,” said coach Myers. “We had a solid preseason, kids worked well together, looking to continue on last year’s strong finish.”
