Shana Hersh of Havre de Grace turned on the speed in the biking phase of the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon Sunday. Her cycling surge carried her to victory over 158 other women in her age group.
Hersh, 39, completed the 15.5-mile bike course in Philadelphia’s Fairmont Park at an average speed of 19.9 mph. It was the 13th fastest bike split in the field of 1,000 women.
She placed 12th overall in 1:25:29, swimming a half mile in 11:16 to open the race and running 5K in 24:41 to close it. She finished with a 3 1/2 minute lead over the runner-up in the 35-39 age group to claim her first victory of the triathlon season.
Also among the finishers was Jessica Edmondson of Bel Air, who finished in 1:57:19.
Pittsburgh Triathlon
Connie and Victoria Sammarco of Jarrettsville were among the finishers of the Pittsburgh Triathlon sprint race Sunday. The two completed a 600-meter swim, 20K bike, and 5K run, with Victoria, 24, clocking 1:54:41, and Connie, 60, 2:44:44.
Stephen Spohn of APG, finished 13th in the 30-34 age group in 1:21:36 with a 15:08 for 600-meter swim, 38:39 for 20K bike, and 26:15 for 5K run. There were 373 finishers in the sprint event.
RASAC Cherry Hill 5 Miler
Zach Huffman led the way over the hilliest of Harford County running courses Sunday, with Megan McNew not far behind in second place.
Huffman set the pace for 17 runners over the RASAC Cherry Hill 5-mile course in Street. He completed the route and its eight long climbs in 34:52, nine seconds ahead of McNew. Dave Stevenson placed third in 35:37; Jeff Hinte, fourth in 36:56; and Duane Christy, fifth in 37:02. Robbie Reeves and Lydia Johnson were second and third among the women, both timed in 50:32.
Check It Out Challenge 8K
Ken Szymanski of Bel Air finished third in the 50-59 age group of the Hadassah Check it Out Challenge 8K in Towson Sunday. He toured a 4.97-mile course at Goucher College in 37:45.
Mark Kaufman of Parkton led all 188 finishers with a 28:36. Megan Digregorio of Baltimore led the women in 32:18.
Dominator 5K-10K is Sept. 4
The first Dominator 5K and 10K, a racing event to benefit the D.O. Believe Foundation, will be held at the Forest Hill Airpark on Saturday, Sept. 4.
The D.O. Believe Foundation was established in memory of Dominic Manuel Osorio, who died of cancer at age 7 in November 2009. The foundation’s goals are to raise awareness and research funding for the fight against pediatric cancer, the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children.
