GLASSMAN PICKED FOR UVA PROGRAM: Northern Harford County State Senator Barry Glassman Harford County is one of 50 legislators chosen from across the country to participate in the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business annual Program for Emerging Political Leaders. Glassman was nominated by Maryland Senate President Mike Miller and completed an extensive selection process.
Underwritten by the University of Virginia, the program presents several initiatives to broaden participant’s perspectives to enable them to challenge the future in new and positive ways. According to a press release from the senator’s office, Glassman was chosen for his “unique rural perspective, his demonstrated skills in maneuvering the state legislative process and public service and the local and state levels.”
“I hope the program will offer some real insight into proposals to turn states like Maryland around,” Glassman, a Republican, said. “We really need to create a new competitiveness in Maryland for business and technology.”
Born and raised in Harford County, Glassman lives in the Darlington area on a small sheep farm with his wife of 21 years Debi and their son Jordan, who recently graduated from North Harford High School.
GAHLER FILES FOR SHERIFF: Republican Jeffrey R. Gahler filed his candidacy for Harford County Sheriff Monday. Gahler, a 26-year veteran of the Maryland State Police, was joined by his wife, Sonya, as he filed for this year’s election at the Harford County Board of Elections in Forest Hill. He is the fourth Republican seeking the party’s nomination to oppose incumbent Sheriff Jesse Bane, a Democrat who so far does not have primary election opposition.
Gahler is commander of the State Police Automotive Safety Enforcement Division and has served the majority of his career in Harford County. Prior to his current assignment, Gahler served as a troop commander, overseeing all state police activities in Harford, Cecil and Carroll counties and providing daily leadership and support to 195 state police personnel.
Gahler is a 1983 graduate of North Harford High School, is a graduate of Harford Community College and a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a master’s degree in management. Gahler lives in Forest Hill with his wife and their two daughters.
TEA PARTY RALLY JULY 3: The Campaign for Liberty of Harford County, the Americans for Prosperity and the Route 40 Republican Club will host a Celebration of Independence & Liberty Rally Saturday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Harford County government building, 220 S. Main St. in Bel Air.
At the Celebration of Independence, a Liberty Rally will highlight the Declaration of Independence and its relevance today along with an explanation of Bill of Rights and its significance as the first 10 amendments to the Constitution.

RUPPERSBERGER FILES: Maryland Second District Congressman C.A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger filed for re-election Monday at the Maryland State Board of Elections in Annapolis.
A Democrat, Ruppersberger’s district includes Southern Harford County along Route 40, covering Edgewood, Aberdeen, Havre de Grace and Aberdeen Proving Ground.
In a press release announcing his re-election bid, Ruppersberger pledged to continue to work to create jobs and improve the Maryland economy while also fighting for better benefits for seniors and veterans, protecting the environment, improving education, funding critical infrastructure improvements, and keeping our country safe. Ruppersberger is seeking a fifth term and serves on the House Appropriations and Intelligence Committees.
