Staff report
Teams from six Harford public schools and one private school sent students to the global finals of Destination ImagiNation in Knoxville, Tenn., at the end of May.
North Bend Elementary School placed 13th in the elementary division and North Harford Middle School placed seventh in the middle division in Challenge A: Direct DIposit.
A team from North Harford Middle also placed 29th at the middle level in Challenge B: DI-Bot.
In Challenge C: You’re Gonna Flip! the team from Bel Air High placed third in the secondary division and the team from Fallston Middle placed 30th in the middle division.
In Challenge D: Do or DI, the fifth-grade team from Harford Day School tied for sixth place.
In Challenge E: Breaking DI News, the team from Bel Air Middle placed 22nd at the middle level and the team from Hall’s Cross Roads Elementary placed 30th at the elementary level.
The eight teams spent May 25 through May 29 at the University of Tennessee for the Global Finals, the largest creativity conference in the world, where 12,000 people from 17 countries participated in the creativity festival.
There is plenty to keep team members busy on days they aren’t competing. Sponsors like 3M and the National Dairy Council have planned activities and exhibits that are fun, but also educational.
Opening and closing ceremonies are scheduled in the evening, as are the duct tape costume ball, the improv fiesta, manager competitions and much more.
The favorite activity at Global Finals is pin trading. Each state and country bring newly designed pins to trade with the goal of meeting a new friend from another state, province or country. The top 10 pins are identified during the week and then at the closing ceremony the number one pin is chosen. This year, Maryland’s psychedelic crab pin was voted favorite pin among the traders.
