Staff report
The former owner of two used car dealerships in Harford County pleaded guilty last month to theft charges stemming from several cases.
Joseph Scott Hollander, 52, of the 3700 block of Federal Lane in Abingdon, entered guilty pleas to theft charges in four of the five cases in which he was charged. The other charges were dropped.
Hollander used to own Ryan Auto Sales in Fallston and Accent Auto Sales, which was in the 1200 block of South Philadelphia Boulevard in Aberdeen before moving to to Route 22 in Churchville.
In one of the cases, Hollander pleaded guilty to stealing a Ford Explorer from G&M Sales & Service on Beards Hill Road in Aberdeen, then illegally selling it to a dealership in Pennsylvania.
He also pleaded guilty to selling the same vehicle on multiple occasions through a scheme in which he forged a title.
Hollander allegedly used the bike as collateral for a loan, and when he fell behind on the payments, had to turn over the bike.
But Hollander allegedly asked to take back the bike temporarily so he could try and sell it.
He allegedly sold it twice, to someone in Ohio and someone in New Jersey. Both people sent Hollander their deposits, but Hollander allegedly never delivered the motorcycle to either man.
Hollander was also charged with writing bad checks and firearms violations and obtaining a loan in his son’s name without his son’s permission.
As part of the plea agreement, Hollander will be sentenced to 40 years in prison, with all but 15 suspended, Assistant State’s Attorney Bill Christoforo said. Hollander will also have to pay restitution, an amount to be determined by his sentencing date June 29.
