An Edgewood man was arrested and charged Friday in connection with the rape and abuse of a 12-year-old girl he knows.

The Aegis is not disclosing the girl’s name or her relationship to the accused for her protection.

On April 22, a 12-year-old girl told an Edgewood Middle School behavioral specialist that Fernando Maldanado Talavera was allegedly teaching her “bad things” she would need to know when she grows up, according to charging documents.

The girl told the behavioral specialist, and later a social worker and Harford County sheriff’s deputy, that Talavera allegedly started touching her inappropriately when she was 10 years old, according to charging documents.

She said he also allegedly showed her explicit photographs and videos, according to charging documents.

Talavera allegedly confessed his guilt to the girl’s mother in a telephone conversation and allegedly told her he is sick and in need of help, according to charging documents.

Talavera, 34, of the 700 block of Sequoia Drive, was charged Friday with first- and second-degree rape, sex abuse of a minor and second-degree assault.

At Talavera’s bail review hearing Monday in Harford County District Court, Assistant State’s Attorney Kemba Lydia-Moore told the court Talavera is a citizen of Mexico and had threatened to flee the country.

A Spanish-speaking interpreter translated for Talavera.

District Court Judge Mimi Raffel Cooper ordered Talavera be held without bail and ordered he have no contact with the girl or her mother.

He was being held without bail Tuesday at the Harford County Detention Center. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 6.
