GAMES & TRIVIA
BY RANDY MCROBERTS
Last week I gave a little insight and thoughts about the high school girls lacrosse season and the prospects of the upcoming playoffs.
While the girls lacrosse UCBAC Championship opponents have been settled (C. Milton Wright and Harford Tech), the same can’t exactly be said for the boys.
Bel Air, North Harford and Fallston (pending the Cougars beat Patterson Mill on Thursday) will end the regular season with identical 5-1 UCBAC Chesapeake (upper) Division records and, of course, each beat the other, leaving the three-team battle that will have to be determined by the tie-breaking procedure of the UCBAC.
I don’t know all points in the tie-breaking process, and don’t know that I care, but if this truly comes down to a coin flip, yuck.
I’d rather see the two coaches play a five-minute game of paper football. Way more exciting, don’t ya think?
Anyway, one of those three respectable and deserving teams will be declared division champion and meet Susquehanna (lower) champion North East for the title.
Those two title games, girls then boys, are scheduled for Tuesday night at Harford Tech. The girls will play at 5:30 p.m. and the boys will follow at 7 p.m.
Just a few days after that, boys lacrosse teams will begin the quest to reach the state semifinals. The regional classifications present some interesting issues.
The big three — Bel Air, Fallston and North Harford — are all in the 2A-3A North region. Oh no.
Bel Air has finished its regular season with a 13-1 mark, in which an 11-1 record will be counted toward a playoff seeding, since tournament games do not count.
Fallston will likely finish 9-2, having a game with Towson today (Wednesday) taken off the schedule.
North Harford will also finish 9-2; their game today with Owings Mills was also canceled.
So, could these be the top three seeds in the region? Could we be sending one of the three onto the state semifinals? I think it’s a pretty good shot, but as to which one? I’m not making any bets.
C. Milton Wright, which has had a so-so year, is the lone cowboy in the 3A-4A South region. Yes, folks — south — with a bunch of teams from Baltimore County, Baltimore City and yes, two from northern Anne Arundel County.
The rest of our teams are loaded in the 1A-2A South region. That’s Edgewood, Harford Tech, Havre de Grace, Joppatowne and Patterson Mill. The other teams in that region are the five public high schools in Cecil County.
Joppatowne was a state semifinalist a year ago, but a season in the upper division this year leaves the Mariners a little under the radar.
Havre de Grace has had a solid year, but North East, which defeated the Warriors early this year to win the division title, may be the team to beat.
Harford Tech has also had a decent year, despite playing in the tough upper division.
So, it’s just a matter of time and we’ll see who’s who among boys lacrosse teams. Enjoy.
