A hearing for Harford Del. Donna Stifler’s breast cancer screening bill will be held Thursday in Annapolis.
The bill, House Bill 182, will require insurance agencies to provide coverage for breast cancer screenings in accordance with the guidelines of the American Cancer Society, as they were on Jan. 1, 2010.
Stifler said she introduced the bill because of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force’s decision over the summer to change the age when woman should get breast cancer screenings to 50.
Maryland has a law that requires insurance companies to use the American Cancer Society guidelines, which recommends women begin getting mammograms at age 40, unless there is an increased risk of breast cancer.
Those who wish to show their support for the bill can attend the hearing Thursday at 1 p.m. before the House Health and Government Matters Committee.
“I urge you to attend this hearing on Feb. 4 and show your support for this necessary legislation,” Stifler, a Republican representing Northern Harford District 35A, said in a press release.
Those who would like to testify can contact Stifler, 410-841-3278.
This bill has bipartisan support, and as of this week, 31 delegates had signed onto the bill.
