Karsten Brown, a self-described racing nut, set a course record in winning the RASAC New Year’s Day 10K in Joppa Friday.

The race was one of three he ran on New Year’s Day. Brown also won the Father Time Frolic 3 mile in 16:52 at Loch Raven at 9 a.m. and the Resolution Run 5K in Baltimore’s Patterson Park at 2 p.m.

Two days later, he won the BRATS Frozen 5K in Manassas, Va., in 16:43, and he finished second in a 5K in 16:56 in an indoor track meet in Arlington, Va.

“I’m one of those nuts who run 50 or more races a year,” said the 35-year-old from Front Royal, Va., who ran 121 races in 2009.

Running in chili pepper shorts with long hair spilling out of a knit cap, Brown built a lead early and held off a surge by Luke Belford to win Friday’s 10K in 35:35. Belford closed to within 33 seconds and finished second among the 95 runners, also under the course record of 36:38.

Jeff Damiano took third in 37:01, and Matt Klaschus fourth in 37:14. Others in the top 10 were Jerry Henderson, 37:25; Derek Alban, 38:31; Rob Baker, 38:53; Kevin Russell, 40:55; Zach Huffman, 41:10; and David Stevenson, 41:55.

Lindsay Lippencott won the women’s race. A member of the Wingate University cross-country team and a C. Milton Wright grad, she ran 45:40 and finished 300 meters ahead of runner-up Megan McNew, who ran 46:34.

Hannah Staumbaugh finished third in 49:39 and Anneliese Carbone, fourth in 51:23. Others in the women’s top 10 were Jackie Hedrick, 51:35; Margaret Starnes, 52:07; Niki Zander, 53:13; Andi Miller, 53:31; Jamie Belford, 53:36; and Kim Fleming, 53:41.

New Year’s Resolution Run

Lorrie Chieffo, of Bel Air, won the women’s 30-39 age group in the New Year’s Resolution Run 5K in Baltimore Jan. 1. She ran 23:18 to finish 15 seconds ahead of the age-group runner-up and 55th among 436 finishers.

Other Harford runners who placed in the age groups were David Ploskonka, fourth in 20-29, 20:09; Scott Smith, eighth in 40-49 in 21:39; and Therese Griffin, third in 40-49 in 24:12.

Karsten Brown won the men’s race in 17:03, and Jennifer Cubilias, the women’s in 18:57.

Competing on Essex’s 10-lap-per mile track, John Carroll runners won all but one of the distance events.

Ian Richardson won the 1,000 meters in 2:47.6, leading teammate Chris Kunkel, 2:52.5, and Tech’s Ben Butler, 2:56.9.
