Playing in the championship game of the G4 Madness boys basketball tournament at Aberdeen High School last Wednesday night, the Joppatowne Mariners rode a 46-point second half to a lopsided 88-56 victory over the Edgewood Rams.
The Mariners, who had topped Havre de Grace 63-48 in the event’s first round to earn a spot in Wednesday’s title contest, were leading 42-29 heading into the halftime break.
Leading the way for Joppatowne’s offense was Dimitrios Jelen, who recorded a 20-point, three-assist performance. Shendell Chase helped the winning cause with 17 points, four steals and a game-high nine rebounds, while teammate Joel Scott notched eight points and eight rebounds. Dominic Harper posted five points and a team-best four assists in the victory. Marez Jenifer and Epe Henriques both netted eight points for Joppatowne, and Najeer Lewter-Tutt scored six points. David Miller registered five points, while fellow Mariner C.J. McMillan scored four points.
With a 15-point showing, Jamahl Ralls paced the Rams in scoring. Keegan Harper and Lawrence Hicks both put up eight points for Edgewood, while Seth Higgins had seven points in the loss. Thomas Dillard and Demetri Eure each contributed five to the Rams’ tally, while Chris Lesight had four points.
Mustangs win final
The C. Milton Wright boys brought home a first-place trophy from the Southside High School’s Jaguar Classic basketball tournament on Wednesday night with a 60-22 victory over the WEB DuBois team.
After allowing its opponents 10 points in the first frame, the Mustang defense began pressuring, which resulted in the DuBois offense scoring just 12 points in the remaining three quarters. Heading into the third frame, CMW led 30-14.
Josh Keys scored 17 points to lead the Mustangs, and Sam O’Hare contributed nine points to the winning total. Matt McNeely scored eight points for CMW, while teammate Jake Lind had seven points and four blocks. Derrick Vogel posted four points, five assists and four steals, while Deric Bryant also scored four in the victory.
Overall, the Mustangs nabbed 14 steals and blocked six shots on the defensive end, while the CMW offense had 16 assists and only turned the ball over four times.
“It was a total team effort once again, as everyone earned substantial minutes,” CMW head coach Chad Richie said. “Chris Bupp, Ryan Kissner, Bryce Monroe, Bryant and Time Milich came off the bench together to wear down DuBois, and give a great boost to [the team]. O’Hare, Nasir Scott, and Andrew Gilley helped CMW to the big halftime lead with key baskets, rebounds, assists, and defensive effort.”
Havre de Grace wins pair
The Havre de Grace Warriors rallied to a victory over John Carroll on Saturday night, beating the host-team Patriots, 43-40.
Anthony Johnson scored 11 points and posted three steals for Havre de Grace. Travonn Bond also scored 11, and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, in the victory.
Playing at Aberdeen last Wednesday in the G4 Madness tournament’s third-place game, the Warriors topped Aberdeen, 50-45.
Hawks split in tourney
Last Wednesday, the North Harford Hawks bounced back from an opening-round loss in the Northeast-Anne Arundel Holiday basketball tournament to top Kenwood 51-48 in the event’s third-place match-up.
In the game’s final minutes, with the score tied 45-45, the Hawks knocked down six unanswered points to seal the victory.
Tyler Lenane led the Hawks in scoring with 18, and was a near-perfect 8-for-9 from the field. Ryan Burghauser recorded 10 points for North Harford, while teammate Jake Donohoe notched nine points and three steals.
North Harford opened the tournament with a 57-49 loss to the host-team Northeast-AA squad last Tuesday.
With 3:30 left before the final buzzer, the Hawks held a 45-41 lead, but could not hold onto their advantage.
Burghauser hit for 18 points to pace the Hawks, while Graham Dougherty had eight points, four rebounds and three steals.
Bobcats dropped
The Bel Air Bobcats lost 77-67 to Watkin Hills last Wednesday in the second round of the Bobby Mill Bulldog Classic tournament at Winston Churchill High School.
Zach Nadolny put up 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bobcats in both categories, while Dezmond Hall had 14 points and four rebounds.
Huskies lose two
Patterson Mill, playing in the Cumberland Holiday Classic tournament last Wednesday, dropped its second-round game with Fort Hill, 57-51.
Mike Eckart led the Huskies in both scoring and rebounds, with 14 points and 16 boards.
One night earlier, the Huskies opened the tournament with a 74-41 loss to Allegany.
Eckart scratched out 12 points and reeled in 14 rebounds, while Garett Burkhead also netted 12.
