With a handy, 38-14 victory over the host-team Fallston Cougars on Friday night, the Aberdeen Eagles were able to even their Chesapeake (upper) Division record to 3-3, while pushing their overall mark to 6-3.
The loss made the Cougars’ season record 4-5, while they are now 2-4 against upper division foes.
Aberdeen scored on its very first possession in Friday’s game, and on the two-point play, Domitric Belle found Shawn Roney with a pass to put Aberdeen up 8-0.
Later in the first frame, Fallston moved the ball to the Eagles’ three after a succession of passes from quarterback Grant Kelly to receiver Mike Montgomery. Ben Barile ended the drive, barreling through the Aberdeen line for a three-yard touchdown. Kelly hit Montgomery with a short pass on the two-point attempt, tying the contest 8-8.
Aberdeen’s Kennard Squirrel returned Fallston’s ensuing kick 34 yards, and the Eagles managed to move from the Fallston three-yard line on six plays. On the drive’s seventh play, Lazarus Turner took a hand-off up the middle, and without any room to make it through the Fallston line, spun and found daylight on the right side, scoring a three-yard touchdown. Belle’s pass on the two-point play was incomplete, leaving the score 14-8.
After Aberdeen got the ball back deep in their own territory on their first possession of the second quarter, Turner sprinted for his second touchdown of the evening, this one coming from 29 yards out. With a failed two-point attempt, the Eagles now led the game, 20-8.
Fallston’s final drive of the half saw Kelly hit Montgomery with a 24-yard touchdown pass, but the score was nullified by a holding call on Fallston. Later on in the possession, with just a few second left before half-time, the Cougars found themselves on the Aberdeen one-yard line facing fourth and goal. As they were out of time-outs, the Cougars were not able to get into the end zone before time expired.
Aberdeen started the third frame by punting after four plays, but Montgomery fumbled on the return and Aberdeen was able to recover the ball on the Cougars’ 26. Three plays later, Belle found Norman Jones in the end zone with a 12-yard touchdown pass for six points. Belle failed to get across the line on the two-point conversion, which left the Eagles up 26-8.
Following an interception by Jones in Eagles’ territory, Aberdeen needed just one play to score, with Michael Kelly scampering 60 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles then opted to try for two points, but failed to convert.
In the fourth quarter’s opening seconds, Grant Kelly moved the ball all the way to the Eagles’ one with a 29-yard pass to Montgomery, then scored on a quarterback keeper play, adding six to the Cougars tally. Fallston’s two-point conversion attempt failed.
On their final scoring drive, the Eagles had a 21-yard touchdown run by Michael Kelly called back because of an illegal block, but Turner managed to score from 12 yards out four plays after the penalty. Aberdeen once again tried for two and could not make it into the end zone, which made the score 38-14.
