Former Harford County resident and Bel Air High School graduate Charlie Wilson had another record-setting day in senior athletic competition Saturday in Landover.
Wilson, an 85-year old athlete competing in the 85-89 age group, won three events in record-setting fashion at the Maryland State Senior Games.
Two of the records set by Wilson broke that of his longtime friend and co-Willow Valley resident, Charlie Irwin.
Wilson won the 100 meters in 17.06, erasing the mark of 17.74.
Wilson’s other records came in two jumps, both having been previously set by Irwin.
Wilson long jumped 11 feet, 3 inches, to best the mark of 8 feet, 3-inches set by Irwin. Wilson also high jumped 3 feet, 10 inches to better Irwin’s mark of 3 feet, 5 inches.
All three records were better than the results that Wilson had in the National Senior Olympics earlier in the month in Palo Alto, Calif.
Saturday’s event closed out Wilson’s 14th year of senior competing. Wilson says he will take a vacation and plans to be ready for the Eastern Shore meet in Salisbury in April 2010.
